Liners. Coping. Decking. Pentair Automation. Lighting. Covers. Everything in one place.
Most vinyl liner pools don't fail all at once. They age gradually — a faded liner here, a cracked coping piece there — until one summer the whole thing looks and performs ten years behind your expectations. Renovation isn't just about aesthetics. It's about bringing your pool back to full structural and mechanical health.
The liner is the most visible element of any vinyl pool. It defines color, depth perception, and the overall visual impression of your entire backyard. Latham Pool Products — Pool Life's preferred liner partner — manufactures one of the most extensive collections of patterns, colors, and thickness options in the industry. The gap between today's liner technology and what was available even ten years ago is significant.
Modern liner patterns have moved well beyond the tile-border styles that defined pools in the 1990s and early 2000s. Today's most compelling designs feature all-floor coverage with no tile line — a continuous pattern that flows from wall to floor, creating a far more architectural, resort-quality appearance. Darker gemstone tones and subtle pebble-style textures create depth and visual richness that older liner technology simply couldn't achieve.
Pool Life conducts a full on-site takeoff for every liner project. We do not estimate; we measure. Liner fit on a vinyl pool is non-negotiable — an imprecise liner leads to wrinkles, pulling at fittings, and premature failure. Our takeoffs account for every step, bench, corner, and return fitting before the order is placed.
Latham Warranty Note: Latham liners carry manufacturer warranties on materials and seaming. Warranty specifics vary by product line and thickness. Pool Life provides full warranty documentation with every liner installation.

Standard white returns, skimmers, and fittings are the default in vinyl pool construction. They work. But when you're investing in a deep navy or neutral gemstone liner, white plastic fittings interrupt the aesthetic. Upgrading to darker gray or graphite-tone fixtures is a straightforward decision with a meaningful visual payoff.
Eyeball returns in standard white are ubiquitous. Darker gray or slate return fittings recede visually against a deep liner, letting the water and pattern take precedence. Pool Life specifies upgraded return colors as a default on any liner renovation where the design warrants it.
The skimmer faceplate sits at the waterline and is always visible. Matching it to the liner tone or coping finish is a small decision with a disproportionate effect on the overall finished quality of the installation.
Main drain covers must be replaced with VGB-compliant fittings on any renovation — this is non-negotiable from a code standpoint. These are available in white and darker alternatives to integrate cleanly with deep-tone liner designs.
Pool Life's design approach: We treat fixture selection as part of the liner design conversation, not an afterthought. Our takeoff process documents existing fitting sizes so we know exactly what replacement options are available before the liner order is finalized. The goal is a finished installation that feels considered and intentional — not assembled from a default parts list.
Coping is the capstone of the pool — it defines the top edge of the bond beam, manages water runoff, and establishes the visual transition between pool and deck. The choice of coping material, profile, and finish has an outsized effect on the finished aesthetics of the entire space.
The most common profile for vinyl pools. A rounded single-bull or double-bull edge provides a safe, comfortable grip and manages water runoff effectively. Available in concrete, stone, and paver-integrated options.
Poured-in-place or precast cantilever coping overhangs the pool edge slightly, creating a clean shadow line and a more architectural profile. Works well with modern geometric designs and square-edge aesthetics.
Travertine, limestone, and bluestone coping bring genuine material warmth and variation. NPT sources premium natural stone coping in a range of finishes and profiles. Each piece carries inherent variation — no two pools look the same.

The deck is the largest visual plane around your pool. It determines how the entire outdoor space reads from the house, from the water, and in photography. Pool Life performs all decorative concrete work in-house with a full stamp library, and sources premium pavers and travertine through NPT.
Pool Life performs all decorative concrete work with our own crew. We maintain a full stamp library spanning European fan patterns, running bond, slate texture, large-format stone, and custom geometric options. All work is done with the brand's precision standards applied directly to concrete mix design, base preparation, and finish work.
Full stamp library. Pattern options include stone, slate, cobble, European fan, and geometric formats.
Surface-seeded or integral aggregate creates a durable, textured finish with natural character. Non-slip.
Integral color or acid stain transforms plain gray into a warm, tonal surface. Works well under sealed systems.
Thin-finish overlays applied over existing concrete. Allows pattern upgrades without full demolition.
For natural stone or premium pavers, Pool Life sources through NPT. Travertine, limestone, marble, porcelain, and concrete pavers are available in hundreds of profiles and colors.

A channel drain (linear slot drain) installed at the pool perimeter or along the deck edge captures runoff that traditional area drains miss. The result is better drainage performance during heavy rain and a dramatically cleaner finished look — a single continuous line rather than scattered round grates across the deck surface. Pool Life recommends channel drains as a standard addition on nearly every concrete renovation. The incremental cost is modest relative to the improvement in both function and aesthetics.
Pool Life specifies and installs NPT Outdoor Elements as part of full-scope renovation projects — fire and water features, outdoor kitchens, lighting, and fencing to complete the environment beyond the pool edge.

Pool Life specifies Pentair as our primary automation platform. Their ecosystem — from variable-speed pumps to IntelliCenter automation to IntelliBrite lighting — integrates into a single smartphone-controlled system. Raypak heaters are specified alongside Pentair equipment for their proven reliability in the Upstate South Carolina climate.

Variable-speed pump technology is the single highest-ROI equipment upgrade available. Energy savings of 50–90% over single-speed pumps are standard. Pentair's IntelliFlow series is programmable for multiple speed schedules and integrates natively with automation systems.

IntelliCenter is Pentair's flagship automation system. It controls pumps, heaters, lighting, water features, and chemical feeders from a single touchscreen panel or the Pentair Home smartphone app. IntelliConnect enables remote access without a full IntelliCenter.
View Automation
IntelliChem monitors pH and ORP continuously and doses accordingly. Eliminating manual chemical testing protects liner longevity, equipment, and swimmer comfort. Integrates directly into IntelliCenter for centralized monitoring.

IntelliBrite 5G LED pool lights deliver full-spectrum RGB color with preset shows. Controllable through the Pentair Home app or IntelliCenter panel. Pool Life retrofits IntelliBrite into standard 1.5″ and 2″ niches in most cases with no structural work.
View IntelliBrite
For pools that need heat with lower operating cost than gas, Pentair's UltraTemp heat pump series is Pool Life's preferred heat pump option. Highly efficient in Upstate SC's climate — effective down to 45°F ambient. Integrates fully with IntelliCenter automation.
View Heat Pumps
IntelliChlor generates chlorine from dissolved salt — eliminating the need for weekly chlorine dosing. The result is softer-feeling water, lower long-term chemical costs, and one less routine maintenance task. Vinyl liner pools are excellent candidates for salt conversion.

Pentair's MagicFalls scupper and MagicStream laminar jets are among the most requested water feature add-ons Pool Life installs during renovation. MagicFalls produces a sheet of water from a raised bond beam or spa. Both integrate with IntelliCenter automation for remote and scheduled control.
View Water FeaturesCan you keep your existing equipment? In many cases, yes — Pool Life evaluates each piece during the site consultation. Equipment that is in good working order and correctly sized for the pool may remain. Aging single-speed pumps, outdated automation controllers, and incandescent lighting are the most common items recommended for replacement during a renovation. All decisions are presented with options and pricing before any work is authorized.
Underwater lighting is the most transformative renovation upgrade on a per-dollar basis. Swapping an incandescent bulb for a Pentair IntelliBrite LED fixture takes a pool from functional to cinematic. The color spectrum, dimming capability, and show modes available in modern LED systems are genuinely impressive — and the retrofit process is simpler than most homeowners expect.
IntelliBrite retrofits into standard 1.5″ and 2″ conduit niches. Most existing niches accept a direct replacement. Pool Life confirms compatibility at site inspection.
IntelliBrite 5G offers full RGB with preset shows: Voodoo Lounge, Caribbean, Royal, Twilight, Gemstone, and more.
IntelliBrite LED uses a fraction of the power of an equivalent incandescent fixture. They also run cool, extending fixture lifespan.
When integrated with IntelliCenter, lighting color, mode, and schedule are controllable from the Pentair Home app. Set scenes to trigger automatically at sunset.
If you only do one thing during your renovation beyond the liner itself, make it the lighting. A single IntelliBrite retrofit, installed in one to two hours, transforms the nighttime experience of the pool entirely. The before and after difference is not subtle.
Pool Life includes lighting evaluation in every renovation consultation. If your existing fixtures are incandescent and the niche is accessible, we will include an IntelliBrite retrofit option in every proposal.

VGB (Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act) compliance is a federal requirement. It is not optional and it is not an upgrade. On any renovation where the pool is drained, Pool Life replaces all main drain covers with VGB-compliant anti-entrapment fittings and verifies bonding integrity. This section covers all mandatory safety scope that is standard in every renovation Pool Life performs.
All main drain covers must meet current VGB anti-entrapment standards. Pool Life installs compliant covers on every renovation as a non-negotiable base scope item. Cover selection includes white and dark tone options for design alignment with the liner.
VGB requires covers that are sized, rated, and installed to prevent hair and body entrapment. All compliant covers must carry a current ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 certification. We document compliance as part of the project closeout file.
Equipotential bonding connects all metallic components of the pool system to prevent voltage differentials in the water. Pool Life verifies bonding integrity on every renovation and corrects deficiencies found during the work.
South Carolina and local codes require compliant pool barriers. If your fencing does not meet current requirements — particularly for gate latching, fence height, and self-closing hardware — we will document the deficiency and recommend corrective action.
Important: If your pool has not been fully drained since original construction and drain covers were never updated, assume they are non-compliant. VGB drain covers are one of the few renovation items Pool Life will not proceed without completing. The entrapment risk associated with undersized or improper drain covers is severe.
Maytronics Dolphin robotic cleaners are Pool Life's preferred cleaning equipment partner. Robotic cleaners are self-contained — they operate independently of the pool's filtration system and return debris directly to their own internal filter basket. This reduces filtration load, lowers pump energy use, and keeps the pool consistently clean without requiring a dedicated suction line.

Dolphin cleaners are available in a range of configurations. For vinyl liner pools, Pool Life specifies models with foam roller brushes or soft PVC brushes. Stiff wire brush configurations — used primarily on plaster surfaces — must be avoided on vinyl, as they can accelerate surface wear and scratch the liner.
Popular Dolphin models appropriate for vinyl liner pools include the Dolphin S300, E10, and Quantum series. Pool Life confirms brush type compatibility for every cleaner recommendation. Always verify the cleaning head configuration before purchasing any robotic cleaner for a vinyl pool.
View Maytronics / DolphinVinyl Compatibility Note: Not all robotic cleaner models are appropriate for vinyl liner pools. Cleaners with rigid wire or hard bristle brush assemblies — designed for plaster and pebble surfaces — can cause premature surface abrasion on vinyl. Always specify a model with foam rollers or soft-bristle brushes for any vinyl liner application. Pool Life confirms brush type on every cleaner it recommends or installs.
Independent Operation
Robotic cleaners run on their own low-voltage DC system. They do not pull from the suction lines and do not affect filter pressure or pump performance.
Protects the Liner
Correctly specified robotic cleaners with foam or soft brushes clean the liner surface effectively without abrasion. Suction cleaners can create repetitive wear patterns at the point of contact over time.
Lower Maintenance
Basket removal and rinse takes two minutes. No hose tangles, no booster pump, no dedicated suction port wear.
Comprehensive Coverage
Modern Dolphin models navigate the floor, walls, and waterline in a single cleaning cycle with onboard gyroscopic mapping.
A renovation is the right time to evaluate whether a spa or water feature belongs in your backyard. Adding spa functionality after initial construction is significantly more complex than incorporating it during a renovation. Pool Life designs and builds all spa and water feature scope in-house.
An attached spa shares pool water and equipment. Latham offers prefabricated fiberglass spa shells that integrate cleanly with vinyl liner pool construction. Spillover from spa to pool adds both visual interest and a continuous water feature effect. All hydraulics are engineered to balance flow between the two vessels.
In-floor bubblers on a tanning shelf create a gentle, spa-like water movement for shallow-water lounging. Deck jets arc water from the coping into the pool — a high-visual-impact feature that requires minimal additional plumbing and runs off the existing circulation system.
Spillover features — whether from a raised spa, a raised bond beam, or an architectural water wall — add movement and ambient sound to the pool environment. Sheer descent waterfalls create a thin glass-like sheet of water and photograph exceptionally well.
A tanning shelf — a broad, shallow platform inside the pool at 6–12 inches of water — is one of the most requested renovation add-ons. Vinyl liner pools can incorporate tanning ledge geometry in renovation scope. Pairs with deck jets, bubblers, and Ledge Lounger in-pool seating.
Column-mounted fire bowls adjacent to the pool create dramatic nighttime environments. Pool Life handles all fire bowl hardware mounting and integration with Pentair automation for remote control. Gas rough-ins are by the homeowner's licensed contractor.
Pre-installed stainless umbrella niches in a tanning shelf or shallow bench allow in-pool umbrellas without drilling later. Pairs directly with Ledge Lounger umbrella systems. Specify during renovation — not as an afterthought.

Pool furniture is not an afterthought. The in-pool and poolside furniture you select determines how the space is actually used — whether the tanning shelf becomes a destination or just a drain point. Ledge Loungers designs products specifically for in-pool and pool-adjacent use, and the quality shows.

Ledge Lounger chaise chairs rest directly in a tanning shelf at 6–8 inches of water. UV-stabilized and chemical resistant. Wide range of colorways.
Pairs with in-pool niche sockets pre-installed during renovation. Shading the tanning shelf changes how the space is used, especially in the South Carolina summer.
Beyond in-pool furniture, Ledge Lounger offers a complete collection of poolside chairs, loungers, and side tables designed for durability in a wet and UV-intensive environment. Everything is scaled to pool environments, not repurposed patio furniture.

Pool Life's preferred cover partner is Coverstar, a recognized leader in safety and automatic pool cover systems. A proper pool cover is among the most safety-critical investments associated with pool ownership. Automatic covers raise the bar further — they eliminate the friction of manual deployment and dramatically increase actual usage rates.

Anchored safety covers meet ASTM F1346 standards for load-bearing capacity. They prevent accidental submersion, keep debris out during the off-season, and reduce evaporation and chemical consumption. Pool Life installs Coverstar manual safety covers in mesh and solid configurations.

Coverstar automatic covers deploy and retract at the push of a button. They meet ASTM safety standards, dramatically reduce evaporation and chemical loss, retain heat, and maintain water temperature more effectively than any other cover type. The key metric: automatic covers get used because they require no effort. Manual covers get left off.

Standard mesh or solid winter covers protect the pool during the off-season. They prevent debris accumulation and reduce algae bloom risk over extended closure periods. Pool Life recommends transitioning from a basic winter cover to a safety cover on any renovation — the cost delta is modest and the safety benefit is material.

Automatic Cover Vault Integration: Coverstar automatic systems require a recessed vault at one end of the pool to house the cover mechanism. Pool Life evaluates vault feasibility during the site consultation. On existing pools, the vault is typically constructed at the shallow-end bond beam during the liner change.
Pool Life works with a wide range of vendors and manufacturers depending on each client's existing equipment, aesthetic preferences, and budget. The partners featured on this page represent our preferred and most frequently specified products, but this is not an exhaustive list. If you have a specific product or brand in mind, let's talk.
Every Pool Life renovation moves through three defined phases. Nothing proceeds until the prior phase is fully confirmed — and no phase transition happens without ops coordinator sign-off.
White-Glove Standard: Pool Life's renovation process is built around a single principle — no surprises. Every scope item, every exclusion, every material choice, and every schedule dependency is documented before work begins. If something unexpected is found, it stops at documentation and authorization before it becomes a cost.
Sixteen questions covering cost, timeline, compliance, equipment, and scope. Structured for direct answers — not marketing copy.
Vinyl liner renovation costs vary widely based on scope. A liner-only replacement typically ranges from $4,000 to $9,000 depending on pool size, pattern complexity, and liner thickness. Full renovations including new equipment, coping, and decking can range from $15,000 to $50,000 or more. Pool Life provides detailed on-site estimates at no charge. We do not quote from aerial measurements or guesses.
A quality vinyl liner with proper water chemistry typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Thicker liners (28 mil or 30 mil) tend to outlast standard 20 mil options. Pools with trees nearby, high UV exposure, aggressive water chemistry, or abrasive cleaners will see reduced lifespan regardless of liner thickness. Consistently balanced water chemistry is the single most impactful variable within the owner's control.
In many cases, yes. Pool Life evaluates your existing pump, filter, heater, and automation during the consultation. Equipment that is in good working order and appropriately sized for your pool may be retained. Aging or undersized equipment is typically replaced as part of the renovation scope. All recommendations are presented with pricing options before any work is authorized.
VGB (Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act) compliance requires anti-entrapment drain covers that meet current federal standards. It is required on all renovations. During any renovation where the pool is drained, Pool Life replaces main drain covers with VGB-compliant fittings and verifies proper bonding. This is not optional and is included in Pool Life's base renovation scope.
A liner-only replacement is typically completed in 3 to 7 business days depending on complexity and pool size. Full renovations including equipment, coping, and decking can take 3 to 6 weeks or more depending on scope and material lead times. Pool Life provides a project-specific timeline at the proposal stage.
Pool Life handles permits for all work within our direct scope of work. Utility work such as natural gas lines and electrical trenching performed by a licensed general contractor or subcontractor requires permits pulled by that licensed trade. All permit responsibilities are clearly documented in the project proposal before execution.
If a leak, compromised plumbing line, or structural issue is discovered after the liner is removed, Pool Life will stop, document, and photograph the condition and present the client with options and pricing before any additional work proceeds. We never proceed beyond the contracted scope without written client authorization. Unknown conditions are the most common source of scope growth in any renovation — our process is designed to surface them transparently.
Liner-only renovations have minimal landscape impact. Equipment replacement may require temporary access around the equipment pad. Coping and decking work requires access around the pool perimeter and may involve removal and replacement of adjacent plantings or edging. Pool Life makes every effort to protect existing landscaping and will clearly communicate access requirements before work begins.
Pool Life walks every client through liner selection during The Vision phase. We bring physical samples and digital references when available. Consider the overall aesthetic of your home and outdoor space, whether you prefer a tile-line border or a clean all-floor design, and how the pattern will read underwater. Lighter patterns show depth and color clarity. Darker or more neutral patterns create a resort-style appearance and minimize the visual impact of minor surface variation over time.
Mil refers to thousandths of an inch. A 20mil liner is the industry baseline and provides adequate performance when chemistry is maintained. A 28mil liner offers meaningfully increased puncture resistance and UV durability and is the most common choice in Pool Life renovations. A 30mil liner is the premium option and is recommended for pools with heavy use, pets, complex steps and benches, or tanning ledge geometry. The difference in cost is modest relative to the improvement in longevity.
Yes. Pool Life can design and construct an attached or freestanding spa as part of a vinyl pool renovation. Latham offers prefabricated fiberglass spa shells that integrate cleanly with vinyl liner pool construction. Spillover features, water jets, and dedicated heater circuits can all be added. This scope is best evaluated during the initial consultation before any demolition begins — adding a spa retroactively after a liner-only renovation is significantly more disruptive.
A channel drain (also called a linear drain or slot drain) is a long narrow drain installed at the pool perimeter or along the deck edge to capture runoff. It replaces or supplements traditional round area drains and provides significantly better drainage performance while creating a cleaner, more modern finished look. Pool Life recommends channel drains as a standard addition on nearly all concrete deck renovations. The incremental cost is modest relative to the improvement in both drainage function and aesthetics.
Pentair automation installation is typically completed in one to two days as part of equipment changeout. Programming, Pentair Home app setup, and a full client walkthrough on system operation are included. If automation is being installed alongside a full equipment replacement, the timeline is absorbed into the overall equipment installation scope.
In most cases, yes. Pentair IntelliBrite LED fixtures are designed to retrofit into standard 1.5-inch and 2-inch conduit niches. Pool Life confirms niche compatibility during the site evaluation before including the lighting scope in a proposal. If a niche requires replacement, that will be documented and priced separately before any work proceeds.
Pool Life provides all labor and materials within the contracted scope — liner supply and installation, equipment, coping, decking, automation, and commissioning. Utility rough-ins such as natural gas line runs, electrical service upgrades to the panel, and permits for those specific licensed trades are the responsibility of the homeowner's general contractor or licensed subcontractor. All exclusions are clearly documented in every proposal. Nothing is assumed included unless it is explicitly listed in the scope of work.
No. While the featured partners represent Pool Life's most trusted and frequently used products, every renovation is different. We work with a wide range of manufacturers and suppliers based on what is already installed, what the client prefers, and what makes the most sense for the budget and scope. If you have a specific product or brand in mind, bring it up during the consultation.
Whether you're imagining a resort-style pool or a complete outdoor living transformation, the first step is a conversation. No pressure, just possibilities.
